M4 Junction 11 and Mereoak
Improvement Scheme

Completed in summer 2010, this £65 million project has made a real difference to Reading’s main traffic gateway – Junction 11 of the M4. Rush hour delays have been virtually eliminated though a major reconstruction of the junction and the associated road network. Works included a separate bus way, cycle and pedestrian access across the junction and the introduction of trees and wetlands.

As the project’s communications lead Glide Consulting was responsible for devising and implementing a communications strategy that focused on building positive relationships with the local community, the wider public and the media.

Howard Larkin, chair of the ICE Thames Valley Engineering Excellence Awards judging panel, said: 'The improvements made to M4 Junction 11 have transformed this vital road network. The visually striking pedestrian bridges make a positive statement at the gateway to Reading and we commend the use of intelligent traffic management which minimised delays during works.”

The ICE made special mention of Glide Consulting's successful community engagement strategy: 'The local community was also engaged with local school children invited to bury a time capsule on the site.'
The project client was Reading Borough Council, Peter Brett Associates LLP were project managers/designers, and partners included Wokingham Borough Council, the Highways Agency, Gardiner and Theobold, Capita Lovejoy, Laing O’Rourke Infrastructure and AECOM..
